Road safety education
Resource centre
Plain-language guidance for everyday road users. This material is general information only. Always follow the applicable traffic law in force (in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Law on the Fundamentals of Road Traffic Safety) and the instructions of authorised officers. The association is not a driving school or a vehicle inspection centre.
Emergency numbers in Bosnia and Herzegovina: 112 (general), 122 (police), 123 (fire), 124 (ambulance).
01
General traffic safety
- Plan your trip and leave enough time
- Wear a seatbelt on every seat, every trip
- Keep a safe following distance – at least two seconds, more in rain
- Signal early and check mirrors and blind spots
02
Defensive driving principles
- Look far ahead and anticipate others' mistakes
- Always have an escape route
- Make eye contact with pedestrians at crossings
- Never assume you have been seen
03
Motorcycle safety
- Ride within your skills and the conditions
- Position yourself to be seen
- Watch for gravel, wet leaves and painted road markings
- Refresh your skills at the start of every season
04
Helmet and protective equipment
- Use a certified, correctly fitted helmet and fasten it every time
- Replace a helmet after any impact
- Wear gloves, a protective jacket, trousers and boots – even on short trips
- Choose bright or reflective outer layers
05
Vehicle maintenance awareness
- Check tyre pressure and tread monthly
- Test all lights regularly
- Keep brakes, wipers and fluids in good order
- Attend regular technical inspection as required by law
06
Road signs and traffic regulations
Signs and rules change. For authoritative and current information, consult the official traffic law and publications of the competent ministries and road safety agencies.
07
Pedestrian safety
- Use crossings and wait for a gap even when you have priority
- Wear something reflective after dark
- Put the phone away while crossing
- Walk facing oncoming traffic where there is no footpath
08
Cyclist safety
- Front and rear lights after dark
- A helmet protects your head
- Ride predictably and signal turns
- Drivers: leave generous space when overtaking cyclists
09
Safe driving in difficult weather
- Reduce speed and double your following distance
- Use winter equipment in the season required by law
- Clear all windows and lights of snow and ice
- In fog use dipped beams and fog lights, never high beams
10
Distracted driving awareness
A glance at a phone at 50 km/h means many metres travelled blind. Set navigation before you leave, silence notifications and pull over safely if you must take a call.
11
Responsible speed management
Speed limits are maximums, not targets. Adapt speed to visibility, road surface, traffic and the presence of children or pedestrians.
12
Driving under the influence
Alcohol, drugs and some medicines impair reaction and judgement. Legal limits are set by law and are stricter for young and professional drivers. The safest choice is simple: if you drink, don't drive.
13
Child passenger safety
- Use a child seat suitable for the child's weight and height
- Never place a rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag
- Check the installation every time
14
Emergency preparedness
- Carry a first-aid kit, warning triangle and reflective vest
- In an emergency in Bosnia and Herzegovina call 112 or police 122, ambulance 124
- Secure the scene, call for help and give first aid only within your training
